Now Is The Time To Nurture!

Posted on 10 May 2022 by Ian Mundy

From a recent survey You HR has run, 57% of organisations said that they do not regularly promote health and well-being initiatives or proactively and positively support their employees to ensure their mental and physical well-being is supported in the workplace. Only 47% marginally confident they knew how to manage ‘reasonable adjustments’ at work, as a result of well-being requirements, if required.

With almost a third (32%) of people in Great Britain feeling like it will take more than a year for life to return to normal following the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic (almost 3 times higher than at the start of the pandemic), according to the Opinions and Lifestyle Survey (OPN) data in February 2022 from the Office of National Statistics (ONS), there is work to do to enable employees to feel safe, supported and their well-being nurtured in the workplace. More than 1 in 10 people and those surveyed that were disabled felt that life would never return to normal.

At You HR we appreciate the persistent challenge for line managers to be capable and have the capacity to proactively support the well-being of employees. They have a crucial role in influencing how employees’ mentally and physically feel about work / work life. Employers have an opportunity (and a ‘duty of care’ responsibility!) to support all employees, as well as equip line managers to be able to have sensitive, sometimes difficult and complex conversations about health and well-being. Equally employers need to equip line manager to be able to identify early warning signs when someone is struggling in work, being swift to support and signpost to further sources of help where need be. With the immense pressure managers have been under in coping with the many challenges over the last 2 years, its important that their health and well-being is nurtured by their employers’ too.

The impact of the last 2 years’ and continuing pressures in the workplace should give us a sense that sickness absence is set to rise over forthcoming months… The NHS is seeing concerns come to fruition with an anticipated staff sickness rate set to triple in 2022.

You HR are attuned to create bespoke solutions that work for clients in creating the right environment to enable people to thrive, ensuring there are ‘first port of calls’ when an employee is unwell or struggling with their health and well-being, through to managing absence, or implementing ‘reasonable adjustments’ where required. We ensure managers are trained and have the confidence and capability to undertake their role, and for employers to fulfil their duties well. We have introduced various initiatives such as awareness raising sessions,; created specific campaigns to prevent and reduce types of absence, implemented employee assistance and mental health first aid programmes, through to master-classes, lunch an learns and specific workshops to educate and increase capability, confidence and robust resilience. Our initiatives have helped to make a big difference by driving positive behaviours such as regular health checks, taking breaks, nutritional advice and increase physical activity and we are seeing more organisations showing a commitment to health and well-being and taking a more strategic approach. Such well-rounded approaches provide the support line / people managers and employees’ themselves need.

A key part of our Exclusive Retained service includes supporting our clients every step of the way to ensure Workplace Well-being is at the fore of their focus in the workplace and their people plans.

We take great pride in getting to know the #PublicSector, #NotforProfit and #SME clients we have the pleasure of creating bespoke workplans for that enables their organisation to flourish and grow.
