Four Day Working Week... is it really worth it?

Posted on 16 January 2024 by Ian Mundy

What is a 4 Day Working Week (4DWW)?

A reduction in working hours, across 4 days with no reduction in pay. Based on a 100:80:100 model – 100% of pay for 80% of time worked, in exchange for a commitment to maintain a 100% productivity!

Why should I move to a 4DWW?

Employee productivity relies not just on the sheer amount of hours worked, but on their wellbeing, fatigue levels, and overall health of the employee. Improving staff wellbeing to bring their best selves to work and building a stronger organisation are steps on a journey of success. A happy and motivated workforce will reap rewards of boosting invaluable individual and organisational sustainability.

What are the benefits of a 4DWW?

What to consider for a 4DWW?

  • Is it right for your organisation?
  • Would you be able to influence your stakeholders to consider this way of working?
  • How will you financially assess the implications with working this way?
  • Are there any other organisational risks will you need to mitigate or barriers to overcome?
  • Will the change you introduce embrace equality and inclusivity for any Part-Time workers?
  • What model can you consider to plan the non-working day?
  • How would you manage operating a model like this and contend with Annual Leave?
  • What contingency planning do you need to put in place?
  • How will you ensure the same level of productivity?
  • Do you need to consult with your employees?
  • When would be best for you to plan a pilot or implement change?
  • How will you monitor and measure success of this change?
  • Where do you need to get support from to progress introducing a 4DWW?
